About the neighbourhood
Chelsea became the post-Stonewall centre of New York's lesbian-bar corridor — the stretch of 8th Avenue between 14th and 25th held a concentration of women-focused venues from the 1980s through the mid-2000s that was without parallel in North America. Most have closed as the neighbourhood gentrified into a gallery-and-residential district, but the memory of the corridor shapes how queer New York relates to Chelsea today. The Roxy dance club, demolished in 2018, was the last anchor of the after-dark identity. What remains is the daytime layer — the appetizing counters, the art-bookshops, and the thrift-store mission anchors that make Chelsea one of New York's most walkable queer neighbourhoods for those who come for the days rather than the nights.
